St Saviour’s Infant School

What impact can creative outdoor learning have on the development of social and emotional skills, and the capacity for sustained, shared thinking?

In this second consecutive year of working with the Reception Year children and staff at St Saviour’s Infant School, James was asked to work with a group of twelve children.

These children had been chosen from across the three Reception classes as those who could most benefit from time spent with James in a small group, outside of the classroom and supported in following their own ideas in creative ways.

The individual reasons for choosing each child were varied, and their needs were diverse. James facilitated weekly sessions with a rotating group of teachers and teaching assistants, and support from mother, artist and arts therapist Gillian McFarland. Each session took place at the same time and in the same outdoor courtyard space.
