James’ practice researches the role that art can play, in enabling experiences of connection between self and place, in a time of climate/ecological crisis. His artwork is multi-disciplinary, comprising of objects formed in the hand whilst walking, sculptures that echo bodily experiences, and video installations of layered imagery and sound.

James’ work in educational settings, including museums, schools and universities, feeds into and informs his individual practice. Children’s playful explorations of place, for instance, offer opportunities to research the innate capacities that we are all born with, and the opportunities these offer us to experience connection through making.
